SUV?|Why I Chose This Chinese SUV for the Beijing to Lhasa Road Trip

At the 5,000-meter-high Dongda Mountain Pass, the roar of the engine told me that Chinese cars are no longer the "all show and no go" of the past.

01. Why the "Self-Inflicted Pain"?

"Are you crazy? Taking a Chinese car to Lhasa? Will it make it?" Before setting off, my friends' doubts came at me like a hail of bullets. In many people's eyes, going to Tibet should be the exclusive domain of the Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser, or at the very least, a large-displacement joint-venture vehicle.

I didn't believe that. As a veteran driver who has been in the auto repair industry for 10 years, I know exactly what level Chinese cars are at now. This trip was more of an extreme "final exam" for a Chinese car than just sightseeing.

02. Let's Go! Unleashing on the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway

Setting off from Beijing via the G6 Expressway, the road conditions were ridiculously good. The 2.0T turbocharged engine was like a shot of adrenaline on the plains, with power on demand. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifted smoothly, and at 120 km/h, the cabin noise was surprisingly well-controlled.

"This car feels even more stable on the highway than some joint-venture cars," I thought to myself, feeling pleased.

03. The "Devil's" Test of the Plateau

The real challenge started from Xining. The altitude gradually climbed, and the oxygen grew thinner. Many veteran drivers say the plateau is a "nightmare for turbocharged cars" because with insufficient air intake, the turbo spools up slowly, and power "plummets."

But my car, at the 5,000-meter-high Dongda Mountain Pass, only lost about 15% of its power. This was thanks to its smart ECU program, which automatically adjusted the air-fuel ratio and turbo pressure based on altitude and oxygen levels.

04. The Worse the Road, the Steadier the Car

After Nagqu, the road conditions started to get "magical." Roadworks, mud, and potholes came one after another. The underbody protection plate scraped with a "clang," but the combination of full-time 4WD and a rear differential lock made me feel like I was walking on flat ground even on the worst roads.

"This chassis is really solid, not loose at all," a fellow Tibetan driver couldn't help but give a thumbs up.

05. The "Dimensional Reduction Strike" of Value for Money

Along the way, I met quite a few "big spenders" driving Prados and Land Cruisers. They had to pay over 800 RMB to fill up a tank, while I could drive 1,000 km on a single tank, and it only needed 92-octane gas.

At a 4S shop in Lhasa, I asked about the cost of a service. A minor service was only a little over 500 RMB, while a Prado's service often costs over a thousand. At that moment, I finally understood what "saving money is the real deal" means.

06. Final Thoughts

Now, I'm safely back in Beijing. This Chinese SUV has accompanied me for over 5,000 kilometers, crossed countless snow-capped mountains, and forded countless rivers.

It proved with its performance that Chinese cars are no longer the "Amu of Wu" (a metaphor for someone with outdated skills). If you also want to drive to Lhasa, give a Chinese car a chance. It won't let you down.
