Which is more solid? Who cut corners where you can’t see?

Forget specs and sentiment—we got our hands dirty. We tore down 5 cars (3 Model Ys, 2 Li L6s) and compared everything from body structure and powertrain layout to material details.

Some findings even surprised us.


1. Body Structure: One’s a “Steel Cage,” the Other’s a “Transformer”

The moment we stripped the interiors and body panels, the differences in the bare bodies were visible.

Model Y​ uses a significant amount of aluminum, especially in the front and rear longitudinal rails and strut towers. The body is incredibly rigid, but repairability suffers—after a collision, many parts must be replaced, not repaired.

Li L6​ relies more on high-strength steel, using aluminum only for parts like the hood and fenders. However, it features specific reinforcements in the B-pillars and sill beams, clearly emphasizing side-impact protection.

Interestingly, Model Y’s single-piece cast rear underbody​ (on newer models) does reduce part count and weld points, boosting overall rigidity. But if that underbody is damaged, repair costs could reach half the car’s value.

After tearing down these 5 cars, we get it now:

The Model Y is more of a “driver’s machine”—everything from the body to the powertrain serves efficiency, lightweighting, and handling. It believes in high integration and iteration of technology, even at the cost of repairability.

The Li L6 is more of a “moving home”—it incorporates tons of targeted design for comfort, quietness, and crash protection, even if that means more weight and complexity. It aims directly at the “tangible features” and “peace of mind” Chinese family users care about most.

So, neither is absolutely better—only which is better for you.

If you love driving, trust technology, and often drive alone, the Model Y is still fantastic.

If you often carry family, want comfort, and value “visible substance,” the Li L6 might hit the spot.

One final point: Cars are understood by tearing them down, but they’re lived with by driving them.
